01 — Why It Matters
Premium tax credits are the quiet engine of the Affordable Care Act. Rather than arriving as a refund months later, they are applied directly to your monthly premium — reducing the amount you pay the insurer each month, from the very first bill.
Eligibility turns on two straightforward inputs: your household size and your estimated annual income for the coverage year. There is no medical questionnaire, no underwriting, and no penalty for a pre-existing condition. The calculation is arithmetic, not judgement.
Because the credit scales with income, households near the lower end of the range frequently find Silver and Bronze plans available at $0 per month after the credit is applied. Others see their premium fall by several hundred dollars.
Enrolling through the Marketplace is the only way to access these credits. Plans sold outside of it — however similar they appear — are not eligible.
“Four out of five enrollees qualify for financial help.”
